Snow Where to Go Mid Winter

Published Sat 15 Aug 2026

The first two weekends in August 2026, Scouts and Venturers explored the winter wonderland of Kosciuszko National Park away from the resorts.
Scouts travelled in a group to the Alpine Activity Centre and joined with South Metropolitan Region where they learnt to:
  • prepare and dress for alpine conditions;
  • travel across snow on snowshoes and cross country skis;
  • manage alpine emergencies; and
  • establish a camp kitchen and setup a snow camp.
Venturers ascended a spur south of Thredbo with cross country skis and slept overnight on the snow below South Rams Head. Both activities were assisted by qualified guides from within Scouts NSW.  Adventurous activities within Scouts NSW support  SPICES (the spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, social and character development of our youth).  These activities build resilience, self-confidence, leadership, and teamwork through safe, structured, and challenging outdoor experiences.  The activities are focussed on affordable fun.
